Practical Travel Tips for Bintan

Bintan is easy to reach, and a few practical pointers will make your stay even smoother.

Getting around

The island is larger than many expect, with considerable distances between the Lagoi resort area in the north, Tanjung Pinang in the south and the beaches of the east coast.

• Car with driver – The most popular option for visitors, especially for day trips or journeys to the east coast.
• Taxis – Available at the ferry terminals and in the resort area.
• Ride-hailing apps – Grab operates in Tanjung Pinang and within the Bintan Resorts area (Lagoi), while Gojek mainly covers Tanjung Pinang. Outside these zones, availability is limited.
• Resort shuttles – Many Lagoi resorts offer transfers from Bandar Bentan Telani ferry terminal.

Money and time

The currency is the Indonesian rupiah (IDR). Carry some cash for food stalls and markets, as not everywhere accepts cards. Bintan runs on Western Indonesian Time (WIB, UTC+7), one hour behind Singapore.

Climate and best time to visit

Bintan has a tropical climate that is warm all year round. The northeast monsoon, roughly from November to January, brings more rain and rougher seas, which can limit some water activities. Drier spells and calmer water are generally more likely from around February through the middle of the year, although short tropical showers can occur at any time.

Etiquette and dress

Most of Bintan's population is Muslim. When visiting a mosque, such as the Masjid Raya Sultan Riau on Penyengat Island, cover your shoulders and knees, and women should bring a headscarf. Remove your shoes before entering. Outside the resorts, modest clothing is appreciated too.
