Among cyclists in Southeast Asia, Tour de Bintan is a well-known name. The international amateur road race has used the island's quiet coastal roads and green hills since 2009.
What is Tour de Bintan?
Tour de Bintan is a multi-day cycling event based at Bintan Resorts in the north of the island. The first edition in 2009 attracted around 200 riders; in later years the field grew to more than a thousand participants from dozens of nations. The event has been part of the UCI Gran Fondo World Series, and its time trial and Gran Fondo road race have served as qualifiers for the UCI Gran Fondo World Championships, a major draw for ambitious amateurs.
Categories
The programme can change from year to year. For the 2026 edition, the organisers listed these categories:
- Gran Fondo Classic (about 150 km)
- Gran Fondo Century (about 100 km)
- Gran Fondo Challenge (about 70 km)
- Gran Fondo Discovery (about 45 km)
- Individual Time Trial (about 17 km)
In the competitive classes, riders are usually ranked in age groups, in line with Gran Fondo tradition.
When does it take place?
There is no fixed date. The 2019 edition was held in late March, while the 2026 edition, relaunched with a refreshed brand, was scheduled for 21 to 23 August. Always check the official Tour de Bintan website for current dates, registration and rules before planning your trip.
Tips for riders and spectators
The route runs over rolling terrain, along the coast and through villages. Expect heat and high humidity, so stay well hydrated. Most international participants arrive by ferry from Singapore's Tanah Merah terminal, and there are flights from Jakarta to Tanjung Pinang. Book accommodation early, as the resort hotels fill up quickly on race weekends.
