Gurun Pasir Busung: Bintan’s Desert and Blue Lakes
A former sand-mining site in the village of Busung has turned into a desert-like landscape dotted with turquoise lakes. It makes for striking photos and is most comfortable to visit early in the morning or late in the afternoon.
Who would expect a landscape straight out of the Middle East on a tropical island like Bintan? Gurun Pasir Busung, also known as Telaga Biru (Blue Lake), lies in the village of Busung in Seri Kuala Lobam district, not far from Tanjung Uban in the north-west of the island.
From mine to must-see
This scenery is not a natural wonder in the usual sense. The area was once used for sand mining. After the mining stopped, the excavated pits gradually filled with rainwater and became lakes, surrounded by pale, creamy-yellow mounds of sand. The sharp contrast between dunes and turquoise water has made it one of Bintan’s most popular photo spots.
Things to do
- Wander across the sand and frame your shots against the blue lakes.
- Use the photo props set up by the operators, such as swings, wooden decks and desert-themed decorations.
- Take a spin on an ATV, available for hire on site.
Note that swimming in the lakes is not advised. The water contains acidic minerals, and the depth of the old mining pits is uncertain.
Best time of day
The pale sand reflects the sun strongly, so the middle of the day can be scorching and glaring. Early morning and late afternoon are far more comfortable, and the low sun gives the sand a warmer tone in photos. The water looks its most vivid under clear skies; after rain the lakes tend to appear greener, which makes the dry season the ideal time to visit.
Practical tips
Bring a hat, sunglasses, sunscreen and plenty of water, as there is very little shade out on the sand. Comfortable sandals or shoes that cope well with sand make exploring easier. The easiest way to get there is by hired car or on a tour, which hotels in the Lagoi area can usually arrange.
