Getting to Bintan by Ferry
Most travellers reach Bintan by ferry from Singapore or Batam. Here is an overview of the main routes and approximate crossing times.
Bintan lies just across the water from Singapore, which makes the ferry the most common way to reach the island. Two ports handle international passengers: Bandar Bentan Telani in the north and Sri Bintan Pura in Tanjung Pinang.
From Singapore
All ferries from Singapore to Bintan leave from Tanah Merah Ferry Terminal in the east of Singapore.
- To Bandar Bentan Telani (BBT) – This port is in the north of the island, close to the Lagoi resort area. The crossing takes approx. one hour and a little more. It is the natural choice if you are staying at a Lagoi resort, as many resorts offer transfers from the terminal.
- To Tanjung Pinang (Sri Bintan Pura) – The crossing to the provincial capital in the south takes approx. 1.5 to 2 hours. This route suits travellers who want to explore the city, Penyengat Island or the east coast.
From Batam
If you are coming from Batam, ferries leave from Telaga Punggur terminal on the east side of the island.
- To Tanjung Pinang – Speedboats to Sri Bintan Pura take approx. one hour and run frequently throughout the day.
- To Tanjung Uban – Tanjung Uban on Bintan's west coast is only a short hop away, approx. 20 to 30 minutes, and is also served by vehicle ferries.
Before you travel
- Check current schedules directly with the ferry operators, as the number of sailings varies by day and season.
- Carry a valid passport for the international route from Singapore and check Indonesia's current entry requirements on official websites.
- Arrive at the terminal early to allow time for check-in and immigration.
- Between November and January, the northeast monsoon can make the sea choppier.
- Remember that Bintan (WIB) is one hour behind Singapore.
